Tarin,

Dental dams are definitely harder to find than condoms. Your local drugstore might not have them, but your planned parenthood/women's clinic should. In my community, it's competely unheard of for a heterosexual couple to use dental dams and very few female couples do. I have met queer women who use them every single time, and they probably have the right idea safety wise.

aleks, thanks a lot for the book recommendation! And thanks everyone for commenting.

Tarin, Daisy didn't say a thing about personal experience.

Jessica, a book I would highly recommend is Disobedience by Naomi Alderman. It's the story of a bisexual refugee from an insular Orthodox community who has to go back when her father dies.

Tarin - dental dams are used to protect against STDs during oral sex. I think they are pretty common for people who want to have safe oral sex.

Do people really use dental dams? I know they talked about them endlessly in all those health ed classes, but they seem like the most obscure, difficult to find, and sexually-undermining protective equipment ever invented. Might as well just keep your clothes on and go at it with some heavy friction.
